Despite this there were many PB’s achieved by the swimmers with the stand out of a 51 second PB swum by Tex Harrison in the Superfish competition on Thursday night. A mighty effort indeed seeing this was the first time Tex had competed in a 50m pool.

Congratulations go to all our competitors for their dedication and commitment to this meet as it is very demanding and gruelling 4 days. A big thank you must go to our Team Manager, Wendy Lowe, who ensured everything was catered for and organised at all times so the team only had to focus on the job at hand. Thanks also goes to Darren Lowe who officiated for the 4 day meet in various roles and is an essential and at times very demanding role in a competition at this level. Congratulations go the coaching staff on a successful meet and a big thank you to the support team of Harry, Vicki & Greg for making lots of noise and cheering our competitors on. As mentioned before it was a great meet and all the team did the Green, Black & White, and their town very proud indeed.

A big congratulations must go to the Port Pirie Swimming Club and Organising Committee for putting on a fabulous Country Champs, well done.

Your Roxby Downs Country Champs Team for 2012;

Matthew Lowe – Captain

Angus Harrison – Captain

Julia Weltner – Captain

Alex Lowe – Captain

Billy Weltner

Tex Harrison

Wendy Lowe – Team Manager

Tony McGauchie – Head Coach

Phillipa Weltner – Coach

Darren Lowe – Team Official

Team Support – Vicki McGauchie, Harry Harrison, Greg Weltner

Roxby Downs Carnival
On the 11th of February the Roxby Downs Swimming Club will hold its annual swimming carnival at the Leisure Centre. She has coached all season, working her magic with the White squad and also looks after committee work such as accommodation and carnival organisation.
Julie Greenfield – Club Secretary
Julie has been instrumental to the committee and general club organisation. From our carnival to end of year presentations Julie just puts up her hand and gets the job done.
Megan Bullman – Treasurer
A volunteer who stepped in to lend a hand. With no swimming ties to the club Megan volunteered for the toughest role in any committee and quietly got the job done. The committee and club are truly grateful for her efforts.
Magriet Van Niekerk – Nominations Officer
While Magriet was pushed into this role nervously, she took on all the new software programs and is now a nominations guru. She had to learn this role on the go and has ensured all our swimmers competed at carnivals all season.
Darren Lowe – Coach / Pool Liaison
Darren has been a keen coach and mentor to our older squad members. He has been the one point of contact with the pool and has worked tirelessly to ensure the club gets best use of the facilities.
Kristy Jackson – Coach / Swimmer
Another quiet achiever, Kristy has worked mainly with the Green and White squads, starting this season new to coaching. She has learnt heaps and is great on pool deck. She even won a few medals in the pool herself this season.
Tanya Parker – Time Trial Coordinator / Committee Member
Tanya has been amazing assistance at the pool each and every day. With setup and packup. She has even got her husband and other parents on board with this task. She has been great support to the coaches, swimmers and committee throughout the season.
Vicki McGauchie – Club Support
A big thanks to Vicki McGauchie who has not only supported Tony, but also been a mother to the swimmers and coaching team and a lot of fun when we go away too.
Michelle Casserly – Memberships Officer / Committee Member
Michelle took over the online registrations program for us this season and has ensured the complicated program has run smoothly for us. She has also put her hand up time and time again to organise fundraising, events and other committee projects.

There are many more people to thank – and I am sure I have missed a few. But here are a few more people who have helped to make this a successful year.

Jenny Longmire

Kelly Seward

Rebecca Gardner

Christine Doran

Harry Harrison

Christine & Greg Abbott

20 March

End of Season Presentation Night
We will be holding our end of season presentation night at the Dunes Café on Friday 1st April from 6.00pm. Julia dug deep and produced PBs in each of her Gold medals wins and also achieved PBs in her 100m backstroke and 200m Individual Medley. Despite illness on the second day of the meet which saw her not able to make the 100m Butterfly finals she bounced back to take home the gold in the 50m Butterfly event later that day. Julia also represented the club as captain and supported all new swimmers throughout the meet. Julia now moves onto boarding school at the conclusion of the holidays and we wish her well in her swimming in the future.

Caitlin Abbott – Produced the "swim of the meet", achieving a 20 second PB in the 200m Freestyle and showing the great courage and determination this pocket rocket is capable of. Although running is her forte, and she had to work extremely hard to make qualifying times to even attend the meet, Caitlin showed all the swimmers what you can achieve with hard work and a big heart. She smashed her PBs in 3 of her swims, including 5 seconds off her 100m freestyle and similar in the 100m backstroke. Caitlin also battled illness on the first day of the meet, but did not let that keep her from swimming the gruelling 400m freestyle event, and although she did not achieve a PB in this event, she set the benchmark for the rest of the swimmers for the meet and showed why Caitlin was also selected as Club Captain. Caitlin too is moving to Adelaide, making this her last meet with the Roxby Downs Swimming Club, and we wish her all the best with her No. 1 sport (running) but hope she continues with her swimming as she has a lot left in her.

Will Abbott – Will competed at both the Superfish and Country Championships events and showed once again what he can achieve when he puts his mind to it. Will produced an outstanding swim in the 50m Butterfly event, although this was least favourite stroke. He once again supported every swimmer in every race and his 100m freestyle swim showed great heart and determination, again the trait that had Will selected as Club Vice Captain. Will too is off to Adelaide and although he says he is finished swimming, we hope he sticks with it at least for fun as he is great for the sport.

Alex Lowe – Congratulations to Alex who competed in the 100m Backstroke at country championships and pulled out a fantastic 1st 50m which showed amazing strength and determination. Alex also produced some great PBs and swims at the Superfish event including a butterfly swim that proved to the club she has a future as a butterfly swimmer (even though she may not believe it herself yet)! Alex also showed great team support, and even ensured coaches and other support crew were well looked after during the events. She showed great maturity which will serve her well as she too leaves our club to attend boarding school at the end of the school holidays.

Matthew Lowe – Wow! What a great meet for Matthew this year. Competing as a 10 year old in the 11 & under age group put some obstacles in this young man's way, but despite this Matthew went out to each race and gave 100% every time. He was the 2nd fastest 10 year old at the event and, being the only representative swimmer who will be returning next year to this event, he gives us a great future and some great swims to look forward to next year. Matthew is a swimmer of the future for our club.

Harry & Annalise Abbott – These two did a fantastic job at the Superfish carnival with Harry producing two 11 second PBs after only recently having his cast removed for a broken arm, and Annalise being the fastest 6 year old girl at the meet. These two have a great future in swimming and the club will miss them greatly as they move back to Adelaide with their family in the next week.

Thank you, too, to all our support personnel; without them we would not be able to have a team perform as we did. Tony McGauchie (Carnival Coach Extraordinaire) Darren Lowe (Club Technical Official), Wendy Lowe (Team Manager) Vicki McGauchie (As the swimmer’s put it “Mum while all the parents were busy”) Tori McGauchie (Assistant Team Manager) Billy Weltner (Team Dietician – LOL).

Congratulations Roxby – what a great effort from a team who only had 3 months training and showed clubs that train 12 months of the year the talent we have!

23 December

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
The club would like to wish all families, sponsors and friends a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. It has been another great start to the season, and although a new smaller structure, this has seen amazing results for the swimmers this year with coaching ratios around 1:5 most days of the week.

With new qualified coaches and committee members on board, the management of the club is becoming much easier and creating a great club and team atmosphere. We hope to see as many families back in the new year for the competition part of the season, where the swimmers' hard work starts to pay off.

The new year will bring about a new recruitment phase, with a big group of swimmers and families moving on in the new year. Any families thinking about competitive swimming should contact the club in the new year and organise for a come and try.

We will be farewelling our Vice President and Committee Members respectively Christine and Greg and their four children Caitlin, Will, Harry and Annalise. From the first time the Abbotts arrived at the swim club they were the “can do” family. Greg and Christine jumped on board with the committee and they started attending carnivals straight away. Their talented and active children have worked hard and achieved great results in the pool and their happy smiling faces and boundless energy will be sorely missed around the pool in the new year. With Greg commuting I am sure we will see him around the pool from time to time and wish them all the best settling back into the Adelaide lifestyle.

We also farewell the following swimmers who are heading off to boarding school; Julia W., Alex L. and Georgia G. Although these swimmers are departing, it is great to see their parents remaining on the committee along with others such as our President Tony and Treasurer Megan and new coach Kelly. This is a great sign - that people want to be involved in this great club even when they do not have children swimming.

Welcome to our new Senior Coach
I would like to welcome Kelly S. to the team. Kelly comes from WA and brings with her a wealth of swimming knowledge and has already jumped into her coaching role head first. She is working with our senior swimmers currently but is keen to work across all groups. We hope that you make Kelly feel welcome to the town and the club and pop in to meet her and say Hi.

School Holiday Training Sessions
Please note that training will continue for all groups over the school holidays – with the exception of Public Holidays. There are no longer Friday night sessions and training between Christmas and New Year will be by private arrangement between swimmers and coaches and will be run depending on demand and availability of coaches.

15 December

Port Augusta Regional Qualifying Event

Congratulations to all swimmers who participated in the Regional Qualifying event on the weekend – especially to Angus who competed at his first big carnival and did PB’s in every race.

Also congratulations to the following swimmers who achieved qualifying times and will now be competing at the Country Championships in January

Matthew L.

Julia W.

Caitlin A.

We encourage as many of our families as possible to attend the Superfish event which is detailed below and goes hand in hand with the Country Championships.

Welcome to our new Senior Coach

I would like to welcome Kelly S. to the team. Swimmers are now required to have swum qualifying times at a Qualifying Meet within the last 12 months. No longer can you nominate for an event in the hope of swimming the time on the day.

There is only one recognised meet left to qualify, which is the Port Pirie Swimming SA Qualifying meet being held on the 11th December. Please ensure if you think you could qualify for an event that you make yourself available to swim at this meet. Please discuss with the coaches who will be able to tell you how close you are to qualifying for this meet. Once again we would like to send a strong team again this year and hopefully bring home some more medals.

School Holiday Training Sessions
Please note that training will continue for all groups over the school holidays – with the exception of Public Holidays and Friday night sessions which will wrap up on Friday December 5th.

To keep up to date with training sessions available please contact coaches regularly and keep an eye on our weekly newsletter and for signage at the pool.

Carnival Nominations
Please review the list below of upcoming carnivals for the season. More than 52 medals were won by our swimmers and trophies in the Pairs Freestyle Handicap Relay went to Kristy and Talana and the Roxby A scratch 13 and Under 200m Medley Relay team of Alex, Matthew, Julia and Will took home the gold trophy in a group personal best time.

There were more than 100 personal best times swum by the 27 Roxby swimmers competing on the day. A special mention Darren L. who achieved a South Australian First – as the starter of the race, Darren also jumped in to compete in the very same pairs freestyle relay race. An amusing site for most spectators and a great swim by Darren and his daughter Alex.

We had swimmers from 6 clubs attend our carnival this year with more than 75 competitors ranging from 6 years old through to 40 something… It was a great atmosphere with Harry spurring the crowd on all day and ensuring there was plenty of cheering and support for the swimmers in the pool.

The Rotary Club of Roxby Districts did a fantastic job at running the BBQ breakfast, lunch and dinner for us and it was heard many time around the pool they made the BEST hamburgers ever.
